Baxter State Park -- Maine

Hiking in Baxter State Park

I've lived in Maine on and off for eighteen years. Mostly off -- as I was in Texas for a big chunk of that time. But in all of the time I've been here, I've never made it to Baxter State Park -- home of Katahdin, the highest peak in Maine. We decided to go before it got too cold. There was hardly anyone there, which was amazing. Apparently hiking Katahdin in the summer can be a little like walking on a freeway. But we only saw about a dozen people all day. It's a rocky hike up to the campground at the base of the mountain, but it was so worth it. By the time we got there, it was warm enough to take off our jackets. The sun came out and burned off the fog. It was, I think, perfect.

My son, Harrison, said he wanted to visit the highest peak in all 50 states. I told him that sounded fantastic. Well, except for Danali in Alaska. That's probably a little out of our reach for now, but who knows what tomorrow will bring.
