WHERE DO YOU GET YOUR IDEAS?
Scrambled Eggs at Midnight was conceived on a long drive from East Texas to Austin. Anyone who has ever attempted to drive across Texas, either vertically or horizontally on the map, knows that for the majority of the trip you end up looking at a vast expanse of nothing. I mean, there is stuff there to see, but it is separated by miles and miles of scrub brush and barbed wire fences with the occasional cluster of billboards thrown in. It was the presence of the billboards that inspired Scrambled Eggs at Midnight. The first was an advertisement for a Renaissance Faire. While this was rolling along in my head, I passed a sign advertising a Bible outlet, a huge fireworks megamart, and a huge garden center with thousands of stone statues. Other places didn’t make the cut. I didn’t include the XXX movie store with the Christmas lights still blinking on it in March, nor did I include the all-you-can-eat pork buffet advertised outside of Waco, but I still might in a novel someday.
