A recent article in Bob Appetit called for bringing back Rainbow Sherbet Punch. Obviously the writers of that fine magazine don't attend a lot of church socials or community dinners. If they did, they would note that the ubiquitous sherbet punch in all its variations is alive and well. In fact, I just had some a couple of weeks ago. The basic recipe is sweet juice/sherbet/something fizzy. The percentages and flavor combinations are nearly endless. but the basic recipe I grew up with is this:
One gallon of pink lemonade (preferably from concentrate)
Two liters of Sprite
One brick of orange sherbet
Pour the liquids into a big punch bowl and then add blobs of the sherbet. Allow to melt into a creamy goodness.
Variations:
Juices: Grape juice, Hawaain Punch (any variety), lemonade, limeade, orange juice, cranberry juice, grapefruit juice. (Pretty much anything but apple probably, but then who knows. Maybe apple would be awesome.
Sherbet:
Rainbow, lime, orange, pineapple, raspberry, or switch to vanilla ice cream if you prefer.
Fizzy drinks:
Sprite, 7-up, ginger ale, or any seltzer.
Colors are important -- pink or blue for baby showers. Acid green for Halloween.
Just like the articles calling for bringing back scalloped potatoes and tuna casserole and Jello molds. I don't think they've gone anywhere. They are still there. You just have to know where to find them.
